MINUTEMEN - 8/2/84 at Flynn’s Ocean 71 in Miami Beach, FL

Wow, I just found this totally amazing site called Corndogs with all kinds of live and rare audio and video from Mike Watt’s bands including The Minutemen, Firehose and Mike’s dual bass guitar band Dos with Kira. Of particular interest to this blog is the show the Minutemen played Miami’s nefarious Flynn’s Ocean 71. The bar / club Flynn’s Ocean 71 was a total dive located at the back of a scummy hotel and the owners had a horrible reputation with the local bands. I remember one time when I was in junior high Flynn’s was having an “All Ages Battle of the Bands” and my band was going to play in it. My bass player’s mother drove us to the show and some sleazy guy with a purple mohawk tried to sell her pot and she made us all go home without playing the show…
+ Here’s a link to the Minutmen FM radio simulcast from that Flynn’s show. You’ll find both MP3 and FLAC format of all 42 of the songs from the setlist…

I was wondering if anybody remembers if and what band opened for the Minutemen?? Someody told me The Eat played that show and another person swears Rugged Edge opened ?? Could it have been Charlie Pickett and the Eggs ?? I don’t know, I was too young to go to that show.
On the subject of The Minutemen, if you’re a fan, you must check out Mike Watt’s Hoot Gallery page of Minutemen pictures. This picture’s great…

Check out George Hurley’s hair, he looks like he dropped out of a Simply Red or flock of Seagulls video!! D. Boon’s t-shirt is classic.

I was there both shows. I got drenched in D Boone’s sweat! As I remember, all the “cool kids” didn’t bother to show either of the two nights they played. It was the same twenty people both nights.
And George talked to Mike Watt a few years after at a show in Minnisota somewhere, where Watt said Richard Shelter totally ripped them off and made them stay in one of those crappy Flynn’s rat infested hotel rooms. He said he’s never go back to Miami.
Thanks Richard.
d.boon is missed.
