Florida Punk Rock Bands - Past and Present

OK, so I haven’t actually gotten around to doing much of anything here yet. My initial goal was to go through my enormous 7″ collection of records from Florida (and non-florida) bands I acquired at gigs in the 80’s and 90’s when my band was playing with a lot of other Florida bands as well as national touring bands.

Call me a purist, but for me, the Florida bands have always had more heart, originality and true DIY ethic. Maybe it’s a symptom of growing up in South Florida where national touring bands only venture with caution due to the agressive sun-drenched Florida crowds full of surfers, skaters, dopers, moshers, skinheads, fashion punks and whatever else crawls out in the middle of the might to go see shows at some dive. One thing I do know is that Florida bands are always more interesting, even if most of them break up before they ever get an ational exposure.

Currently, I’m up in the Philadelphia area for the summer and my vinyl collection is down in Florida, so I’m going to have to wing this for the moment and rely on the contributions of YOU PEOPLE out there to help out with some information and history about punk bands in Florida from the 1960’s until today.

If you have any information on the following bands (or any other bands not listed here), please either post a comment here on this article or contact us via email at floridap [at] floridapunkrock.com with any links, show memories, flyers, information, pictures, cover scans, mp3’s, video etc… All contributors will receive full credit for whatever they send in, so if you have a website or are in a band yourself, please inclde a url so we can link back to you.

Ronald McDonald Seen Eating Human Flesh

This picture was snapped behind the McDonalds on South Dixie Highway in , FL. A group of punk squatters were dumpster diving for food behind the fast food restaurant when they happened upon this gruesome scene of eating human flesh. Luckily one of the squatters had an iPhone he stole from some fan and he snapped this picture.

Ronald Eats Flesh

Look at the suprised expression on Ronald’s face as he is caught in this istic act. This will make you think twice before the next time you order some chicken mcNuggets. Just because it tastes like chicken doesn’t mean it’s really chicken. It could be a toe or a finger from one of Ronald’s victims.

This one goes without saying… You Deserve a Break Today !!!!

MINUTEMEN - 8/2/84 at Flynn’s Ocean 71 in Miami Beach, FL

Minutemen Live

Wow, I just found this totally amazing site called Corndogs with all kinds of live and rare audio and video from Mike Watt’s bands including The Minutemen, Firehose and Mike’s dual bass guitar band Dos with Kira. Of particular interest to this blog is the show the played Miami’s nefarious Flynn’s Ocean 71. The bar / club Flynn’s Ocean 71 was a total dive located at the back of a scummy hotel and the owners had a horrible reputation with the local bands. I remember one time when I was in junior high Flynn’s was having an “All Ages Battle of the Bands” and my band was going to play in it. My bass player’s mother drove us to the show and some sleazy guy with a purple mohawk tried to sell her pot and she made us all go home without playing the show…

+ Here’s a link to the Minutmen FM radio simulcast from that Flynn’s show. You’ll find both MP3 and FLAC format of all 42 of the songs from the setlist…

I was wondering if anybody remembers if and what band opened for the Minutemen?? Someody told me The Eat played that show and another person swears Rugged Edge opened ?? Could it have been Charlie Pickett and the Eggs ?? I don’t know, I was too young to go to that show.

On the subject of The Minutemen, if you’re a fan, you must check out Mike Watt’s Hoot Gallery page of Minutemen pictures. This picture’s great…

the Minutemen

Check out George Hurley’s hair, he looks like he dropped out of a Simply Red or flock of Seagulls video!! D. Boon’s t-shirt is classic.

Dick Cheney - A Real Man’s Man

Ha, just found this interesting image while searching Google for some pictures of rednecks for a post on another blog and thought I’d share it here…

Be careful who you vote for, you never know when you’re going to get a shotgun wielding maniac who shoots his friends in the ass.

Mark this day on your calendar because it is the beginning of a mind numbing journey into the past, present and future of all that is punk in the backward state of Florida. Many of us who have found ourselves stuck in a land that time didn’t forget, it just ignored it, have only our music and like minded friends to alleviate an otherwise tragic existence. Most people in other parts of the country don’t realize how desolate the true underground music scene is when you live in an area so far off the beaten path that the majority of touring bands don’t want to bother venturing into the wasteland. For nearly 3 decades, the outcasts, miscreants and deviants of Florida’s nether regions have amused themselves with their local music scenes populated with bands that don’t give a rat bastard’s ass about the quest for fame and fortune instead choosing to drink themselves into a blissful oblivion with ears ringing from high decible squalor and unabashed raunch.

Yes, I love the Florida underground punk music scene (or lack thereof) and all of it’s strange and beautiful nocturnal inhabitants who have laboured on shitty sound systems in dive bars in the middle of such exotic locations such as Little Hati and Ybor City. One quickly learns it’s not all about braving the shotgun toting rednecks or the quasi-nazi skinheads or even the hair twirling, spandex wearing metalheads who will stop at nothing to disrupt the pleasures of being engulfed in a wave of mutilating noise. It’s about the passion, drive and originality that separates those who think in pack mentalities from those of us who think for ourselves.

With that in mind, I’ll leave you with a few quotes to ponder….

bullet “What distinguishes the majority of men from the few is their inability to act according to their beliefs.” - Henry Miller

bullet“Desperation is the raw material of drastic change. Only those who can leave behind everything they have ever believed in can hope to escape.” - William S. Burroughs

bullet“Some people never go crazy, What truly horrible lives they must live” - Charles Bukowski

bullet“The stone that the builder refused, will always be the head cornerstone.” - Bob Marley

Cheers,
David X. Smith
